‘Frame your mind to mirth and merriment, which bars a thousand harms and lengthens life.’ ~ William Shakespeare
I haven’t really been into Christmas for the last few years. The over commercialization of material goods and ever growing ‘I want’ lists have really tainted the holidays for me. Last year I begrudgingly sent Christmas cards as well as spent countless hours trying to find ‘perfect’ gifts – neither of which I could pick out of a police line up THIS year. So, in an effort to bring back the ‘merry’ in Merry Christmas, I’m starting a new tradition – introducing 24 DAYS OF MERRIMENT!
I appreciate this isn’t exactly a new concept as it closely mirrors the December Random Acts of Kindness suggestions currently littering most Pinterest pages. But the idea behind this advent of merry is to spend twenty-four days sharing, caring, giving back, and bringing awareness to a host of different populations, organizations, and people. Each day between December 1st and December 24th my family and I will perform at least one act of merriment. Some will be donations to charities or support centres, others will involve doing something ‘extra’ for a friend or co-worker. The goal over these twenty-four days is to refocus back to what this season is all about; that its underlining simplicity is what truly matters most.
This past week involved the preparations for this event, and aside from having to resort to shopping at one of my most disliked stores (hint: it ends in Mart) and a minor incident where Dora almost got caught shoplifting, the entire process has been, well, FUN. All of a sudden the holidays seem more relaxed and cheery, exactly how I remember them as a child. My inner Scrooge has noticeably been silenced and, dare I say, I’m actually looking forward to the hustle and bustle of the holiday swell.
Now, while I won’t be posting what I’m doing for each of the days of merriment here on my blog, you are more than welcome to follow me on my Instagram page: @recreatesimple (note: you don’t need an Instagram account to do so). Or just click on the “My Instagram Scrapbook” image in the right column of this page. Each day I will highlight one act of outreach, kindness, or merriment – and I encourage all of you to share your acts of merry as well -remember, simplicity breeds community.
Merry Christmas to each and every one of you.
Let’s bring back merry together 🙂
